Syria, Lebanon, and Palestine in 2024: The Fall of a tyranny, a Fragile Ceasefire, and the Horror of Ongoing Genocide

Rarely do the events of a single year collide with such spectacular intensity as they did by the end of 2024.

In the span of ten days, the Assad regime in Syria faltered and collapsed, with its president fleeing and leaving behind a grim legacy of mass graves, an extensive network of prisons and detention camps, and mercenaries eager to swear allegiance to the highest bidder.

This upheaval was preceded by a fragile ceasefire in Lebanon following a ferocious Israeli war that wrought widespread destruction and claimed thousands of lives. At the same time, the genocide in Gaza persisted unabated, fueled by either complicity or empty denunciations, even as emerging mechanisms of international justice began to target Benjamin Netanyahu’s government.

A Palestinian doctor named Hussam Abou Safiya

What makes the image of Palestinian doctor Hussam Abu Safiya walking through the rubble of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza toward two Israeli tanks so iconic? Is it the universal elements of human tragedy that transcend geographical and temporal boundaries? Or is it the specific context, both geographical and temporal, that makes it a profound and accurate representation of the Gazan epic and the conditions of occupied Palestine in late December 2024, when the photo was taken?

Part of the answer lies in the fact that the image encapsulates both dimensions: it is anchored in its unique space and time, yet it transcends them. It captures a moment of extraordinary cruelty that is at once universally human and distinctly Palestinian. It is the moment when a doctor emerges from the ruins of his destroyed hospital, after the killing or deportation of his patients and staff, and walks in his white coat toward the perpetrators of these crimes – Israeli soldiers entrenched in armored machines of death atop the rubble.

Il est rare que des événements d’une seule année s’entrechoquent avec une intensité aussi spectaculaire que celle observée à la fin de 2024.

En l’espace de dix jours, le régime d’Assad en Syrie a vacillé, s’est effondré, et son président s’est enfui, laissant derrière lui un héritage sinistre : des fosses communes, un archipel de prisons et de camps de détention et des mercenaires disposés à prêter allégeance au plus offrant.

Ce bouleversement a été précédé par un cessez-le-feu fragile au Liban, à la suite d'une guerre israélienne féroce, qui a causé des destructions massives et l’anéantissement de milliers de vies humaines. Parallèlement, le génocide à Gaza s’est poursuivi et se poursuit toujours, renforcé de complicités ou de dénonciations vaines, même si des mécanismes naissants de justice internationale commencent à cibler le gouvernement de Benjamin Netanyahou.
